Hospital for Internal Medicine

Würzburg, Germany

Steel, painted

17 x 3 x 8 meter

State Building Department Würzburg (Principal)

The sculpture was conceived as a building-site art project for the inner courtyard of the Hospital for Internal Medicine in Würzburg. It’s a real-size model of a deformed Merklin steel-lattice transmission tower.

In many European myths, the dragon em-bodies difficulties which must be overcome before a lofty goal can be achieved. The fabulous fire-breathing creature is revered in China and Japan as a bringer of good luck and a defender against demons. An electrical transmission tower standing in the interior courtyard at the hospital in Würzburg has metamorphosed into a dragon, thus conveying these helpful symbols to patients, hospital personnel and visitors.
